History
Peter Borg-Neal is the Chief Executive of Oakman Inns & Restaurants, and is the creative entrepreneur behind The Akeman, the company’s first and flagship site. His vision for the Akeman was a modern public house and restaurant at the heart of the community, and this idea meant meeting the requirements of the contemporary restaurant goer while retaining all the traditional warmth, hospitality and comfort of a local pub. Great food and drink lay at the heart of Peter’s plan.
Located on Akeman Street, evoking the legend of the Oakman or ‘Akeman’, after which both The Akeman and the ancient Roman road where it sits, is named, the pub is sited in what was originally a 1901 classically designed William Huckvale house. Fitting in comfortably with Tring’s vernacular architecture, predominantly early Victorian, artistic and contemporary design transformed the formerly disused office space into an architecturally commendable space which offers the luxury of modern living in a warm and convivial setting.
At the heart of The Akeman is its open kitchen design, featuring the unique charcoal-fuelled Josper Oven – an innovative yet traditional method of cooking which imbues an aromatic chargrilled flavour to fresh meat and fish dishes.
In 2009 The Akeman won the Publican Award for the UK Best Pub Design and in 2010, it was Highly Commended in the Great British Pub Food Award’s All Day Dining Pub of the Year.
